54 too many. When invited to enter the competition to design a 58 unit housing development in such a scenery we immediately felt blending in with the landscape was our responsibility.
Looking back at how humans historically dealt with steep slopes we always came up with agricultural terraces, the only man made construction culturally accepted and understood as landscape.
The housing units fit into the terracing landscape loosing their domestic scale as the limits between houses are diluted behind the ground walls, patios are punched to guarantee the quality within the dwellings and green roofs offer climate comfort and reduce the overall impact.
From the inside, materiality and spatial conditions root the project to the Empordà evoking the traditional Masia. The aim is to provide a housing typology halfway in between the big rural constructions (Masia) and the generic beach apartments scattered worldwide. Houses which understand the benefits of sharing and the market needs without giving up their personality.
